Out of God’s Hat

Adabted from: Daniel Ladinsky, The GiftPoems by Hafiz, the Great Sufi Master (New York, Penguin, 1999) p154. Print.

  • Sit up, close your eyes, and breathe out and in for three rounds (long slow exhalations through the mouth and normal inhalations through the nose).
  • See and become one with the experience of the stars pouring into the sky out of a magician’s hat.
  • Breathe out one time.
  • See and sense them falling into your hair, and even entangling your eyelashes into luminous playful knots.
  • Breathe out one time.
  • As a seeker you are welcome to cut a radiant tress that lays upon my shoulders.
  • Breathe out one time.
  • Wrap it around your trembling heart and body that craves divine comfort and warmth.
  • Breathe out one time.
  • Lean your sweet neck and mouth out of that dark nest where you hide.
  • Know that God is like a pitcher of milk in the hands of a mother who loves you.
  • All of its contents are being churned into dancing suns and moons.
  • Breathe out one time.
  • Know and experience as one this brilliant streaming light into your mind.
  • Breathe out and open your eyes.
